Among the most difficult stories to understand in the Bible is the story of Jephthah. Though an obscure figure in the Bible, Jephthah attained honor to be mentioned in the heroes of faith. However, if we read the life of Jephthah and the  seemingly  harsh sacrifice of her daughter, we might immediately question the wisdom of Paul for having him listed in Hebrews 11. Some critics of the Bible would even seize the life of Jephthah as an example of God’s unreasonable sense of justice and mercy. For these reasons, we need to take a deeper look at the story of Jephthah. Did Jephthah really have a very sinful life that should have disqualified him from entering the Kingdom of God? Did his story really reveal God as a God who is bloodthirsty and devoid of mercy? Let’s find out today as we learn the lessons from the life of Jephthah. In  Proverbs 22:4 , we discover two important Keys.  " Humility and the fear of the lord bring honor, wealth, and life." This verse contains an awesome promise! What could you desire that is not contained in this promise? Think about how our society seeks after honor, wealth, and life. Yet, God promised to give this to us but there is a catch. The way to the promise is guarded by two conditions: first- humility ,  second- the fear of the Lord.  These twin towers of the godly character hold open the door through which the blessings of God flow into our lives. The fear of the Lord is the attitude that results from remembering that God is watching  every action , weighing  every motive , and aware of  every thought . Our goal should be love the Lord in such a manner as not to want to disappoint Him, but rather to bring Him delight.

Wanting what someone else possesses has been a part of human nature since forever. Remember when Adam and Eve's son killed his brother in a jealous rage ( Genesis 4:3-8 )? Later, God told Moses to write down for the Israelites, "Hey, stop envying other people's stuff!" ( Exodus 20:17 ; paraphrased). In the New Testament, Jesus clarified, "Stop envying other people's stuff because there's more to life than STUFF" ( Luke 12:15 ; paraphrased). Clearly, jealousy is a problem for human beings... Is jealousy a sin? Feeling jealous is never a pleasant feeling. Feeling envious of another person saps the joy we could experience from our own lives. Dwelling upon jealousy or envy will lead to more unpleasant emotions—like anger, frustration, and discontentment ( Proverbs 14:30 ).
